Hygiene poverty is not being able to afford the everyday hygiene and personal grooming products many of us take for granted.
It’s not being able to take a shower with shampoo, conditioner and soap. It’s not using any toothpaste or washing your clothes less often because you can’t afford laundry detergent. It’s being scared to leave your home during your period, or missing school because your homemade solutions leak and could embarrass you.
More than a million children and their families in the UK are experiencing hygiene poverty. 15% are having to share toothbrushes, 1 in 5 children don't play with others because they're worried what people might think, 16% wear the same clothes for multiple days and 1 in 10 have been bullied because they don’t have access to basic hygiene products.
Hygiene poverty has a negative impact on an individual’s wellbeing with many parents describing how their child has experienced feeling anxious or depressed, ashamed or embarrassed. It affects attendance and performance at school with a high percentage having missed school due to dental hygiene issues.
At Stable and Wild we are committed to supporting our learners however we can and have set up a hygiene bank to help make essential everyday products available at our site to those who need them. You can help us to raise FREE donations for our hygiene bank EVERY time you shop online. Just use #easyfundraising!
