Halving the attainment gap, 1 hoof at a time

How does our work align with the governments targets to halve the attainment gap for children and young people?

At Stable & Wild, our commitment to closing the attainment gap is not a new ambition — it is the foundation of why we exist. We are passionate about creating opportunities for children and young people who face disadvantage, so they can grow, thrive and improve their life chances.

The Government has set a clear ambition to halve the attainment gap between disadvantaged pupils and their peers. The data shows why this matters. Pupils eligible for free school meals (FSM) consistently achieve lower outcomes at Key Stage 4 compared to non-disadvantaged peers, and young people without secure qualifications in English and Maths are significantly more likely to face unemployment in adulthood.

Educational attainment remains one of the strongest predictors of future income, health and social mobility.

83% of the children and young people who attend our provision are in receipt of Free School Meals, (a widely recognised indicator of socio-economic disadvantage). This means that the majority of the young people we support are statistically at greater risk of under-achievement and reduced life chances. Closing the gap for them is both a moral responsibility and a practical priority.

A Proud Member of the Fair Education Alliance

We have been members of the Fair Education Alliance for six years — a national coalition of organisations working to tackle educational inequality. This membership reflects our long-standing commitment to system-wide change and collaborative action.

Embedding Literacy and Numeracy in Meaningful Ways

One of the key ways we support attainment is by embedding literacy and numeracy within our practical, hands-on sessions. Rather than teaching skills in isolation, we integrate reading, writing, measuring, calculating and problem-solving into real-life activities.

Young people might:

  • Measure feed quantities and calculate ratios

  • Record observations and write reflective journals

  • Follow written instructions and create care plans

  • Budget for equipment or plan projects

This practical application makes learning engaging, relevant and memorable — particularly for those who struggle in traditional classroom environments.

Expanding Opportunities: Functional Skills

We are now taking the next step by offering Functional Skills qualifications in English and Maths from Entry Level 2 through to Level 1. This provides young people with the opportunity to gain recognised qualifications in a setting where they feel emotionally safe, supported and able to learn.

For many of our learners, confidence and regulation are the barriers to achievement — not ability. By addressing emotional wellbeing first, we unlock academic potential.

Enrichment That Builds Life Chances

Stable & Wild offers more than academic support. Our fully immersive countryside setting provides rich enrichment opportunities that many disadvantaged young people do not otherwise access. Time spent outdoors, caring for animals, building practical skills and stepping away from screens and social media pressures creates space for reflection, resilience and personal growth.

Research consistently shows that enrichment experiences improve , engagement and long-term outcomes. By combining academic development with emotional regulation and confidence-building, we support the whole child — not just their grades.

Looking Ahead

As national focus intensifies on narrowing the attainment gap, Stable & Wild stands ready to play its part.

Through early intervention, meaningful learning, formal qualifications and transformative enrichment experiences, we are helping young people not only to achieve — but to believe they can.

Closing the attainment gap is about more than data. It is about futures. And we are proud to be part of that journey.
